Pas de photos aujourd'hui. Et pour cause, il s'agit de mon retour en Belgique... Debout à 4h du matin ce dimanche. Je prends mes affaires et descend à l'accueil. Remise de la clé. Je retrouve Patrick. Audrey, Debby et Rianne viennent nous dire au revoir. Après 3 semaines de vie commune, j'ai dur de retenir mon émotion...A 4h30, la navette est là, direction aéroport, et Belgique. Lundi matin.

No pics today. For a good reason, it's my come back in Belgium... Wake up at 4am this sunday. I pick my stuff, go to the desk, and give the room key back. Patrick is there. Audrey, Debby and Rianne wake up too, to give us a hug. After 3 fantastic weeks, it's hard for me not to cry...At 4.30am, the shuttle is there, airport and finally Belgium. Monday morning.

Ca y est, c'est fini! Dernière journée aux USA. Réveil à 7h30. Petit déj, et dernier démontage. On remballe tout! Dernier chargement aussi...On se met en route pour San Francisco, l'occasion d'une dernière "morning song". Et comme promis ici, voici enfin la vidéo!

That's it...It's over! Last day in the states. Wake up at 7.30. Breakfast, last dismantling, last loading... We leave Petaluma for San Francisco, the last opportunity for the "morning song". As i said here, finally, time for the video.

A 11h, comme prévu, nous arrivons au city center hostel. La boucle est bouclée! Déchargement et au revoir à Aaron...Il aura été un trekleader précieux: expérimenté, rapide, de bon conseil, et connaissant son affaire. Merci à lui!
At 11am, we are back at city center hostel. Our loop is over! Unloading, and farewell to Aaron. He was a great trekleader: experienced, quick, giving good advise... He knew what he was doing! Thanks Aaron!

On s'est enregistré, mis les bagages en consigne et on est parti se promener en ville, dernière opportunité shopping. Nous sommes restés ensemble jusqu'à Union Square. Les filles ont suivi leur chemin, Patrick et moi avons continué ensemble. RDV pris à 15h à l'auberge pour recevoir les clés des chambres.
We registered, put our luggage in the checkroon and went for a walk in the city, last shopping opportunity. We stayed together until Union Square, where Patrick and i split from the girls. Our next meeting will be at 3pm at the hostel, to get the room keys.

Chinatown, Columbus Avenue, North Beach, Fisherman...Pas mal à voir. Shopping aussi. Et retour à pied. Pas simple avec le dénivelé de SF. C'est trempé que j'arrive à l'auberge. Clé, chambre et bonne douche! Séance internet aussi. J'ai tapé ce message. Enfin, je retrouve les autres à 17H.
Chinatown, Columbus Avenue, North Beach, Fisherman...Lot to see. Shopping also. And the walk back. Not easy with the steep streets of SF. I was soaked back at the hostel. Key, room, and nice shower! Internet also, i posted this message.

A 17h donc, on retraverse la ville ensemble. Finalement, nous arrivons sur Fisherman. Nous prenons une table au Hard Rock café. Bon burger, musique, sport live. Retour de nuit en taxi. Le quartier de l'auberge est en effet peu recommandable: clochars, drogués, alcoolos...A éviter donc! On termine la soirée en complétant nos journaux respectifs. Et à 23h15, on lève le camps. Faut dire que le départ approche!

At 5pm, we cross the city together again. Finally, we arrive on Fisherman. We take a table at the Hard Rock café. Good burger, music, live sport. And back to the hostel with a cab. The streets around the hostel aren't safe at night: homeless, drugaddicts, alcoholics... ! We end the evening filling our diaries. At 11.15pm, we go to bed. Wake up time is close...

Vendredi...dernier jour du tour. Pas besoin de démarrer tôt, vu que nous n'avons pas de grande distance à couvrir. On commence d'ailleurs par un nettoyage du matériel et du van. A 9h45, on se dirige vers la Napa Valley, ou nous pourrons déguster du vin si nous le voulons. Arrêt à la Viansa Winery. Mais vu l'heure matinale, et le côté peu authentique, nous ne goûtons pas.
Friday... last day of the tour. No rush this morning, as we don't need to drive that much. We begin with the cleaning of the equipment & van. A 9.45, we go to Napa Valley, where we can taste wine if we want. We stop at the Viansa Winery. But it's early, and not really authentic. So, no tasting.

Prochaine destination, Sausalito. Nous passons d'abord devant le Sonoma Infineon Raceway, qui accueille chaque année Nascar et IRL.

C'est ensuite la deuxième rencontre avec le Golden Gate Bridge. Et cette fois, nous allons le traverser à pied. Le ciel est dégagé, nous pouvons donc le voir entièrement.
Then it's time for the second Golden Gate bridge encounter! We will cross it by foot. Clear sky, we can see it entirely.

Toujours près du golden gate, et plus exactement sous le pont, se trouve le Fort Point site. Arrêt lunch, et vue sur la ville.

On a ensuite un peu de temps libre sur Fisherman's wharf. On a rendez-vous à 17h45 pour la dernière activité de la journée. Rien moins qu'une mini-croisière en catamaran sous le golden gate, buffet-boissons inclus. Pas mal, non?
We have some free time on Fisherman's warfh. We meet again at 5.45pm for the last event of the day. A nice catamaran mini cruise under the golden gate, buffet-drinks included! Cool, isn't it?

Et ce qui devait arriver, arriva...le dernier soir du tour! Certes, nous serons encore ensemble demain, mais Aaron aura poursuivi son chemin! Dernières notes, derniers drinks, dernier feu, remerciements aussi à Aaron. Et sur le coup de minuit, petit BBQ improvisé... A 1h, au dodo!
And what had to happen, happened... Last night of the tour! Well, yeah, we will still be together tomorrow, but Aaron will not be there. Last writings, last drinks, last campfire, thanks to Aaron. And around midnight, improvised BBQ... At 1am, sleeping time!

Debout à 7h ce matin, et routine habituelle. On tourne une page aujourd'hui puisqu'on en termine avec les parcs nationaux US. On reprend la direction des villes, et c'en est fini de la nature pour cette fois! Pas mal de route pour commencer; à la première halte carburant, j'en profite pour téléphoner en Belgique (histoire de me conditionner pour le retour...). Je ne suis toujours pas en grande forme, mon mal de gorge s'est transformé en bon rhume bien embêtant! Bref...

We start the day at 7 this morning, and do our routine. We turn a page as we won't see any other National Parks. Back to the city, and no more nature, landscapes and so on! We have some miles to drive before our first goal. At the first fuel stop, i call Belgium (and start preparing myself for the come back...) I'm still not fit, as my sore throat has turned into a big cold...Anyway...

On arrive à Sacramento à midi. Aaron nous véhicule à travers celle-ci, et nous passons notamment devant la "governor mansion" qui porte mal son nom puisqu'elle n'abrite plus le gouverneur. Nous passons aussi devant le Sutter fort. Sutter étant un chercheur d'or (1848). Ma mémoire fait un peu défaut... Sutter s'est retrouvé en manque de vivres avec ses hommes (+- 30 ?); il s'est dit que la meilleure des choses était malgré tout de poursuivre son chemin. Mais au final, ils n'étaient plus que quelques uns, le reste n'ayant pas survécu. Le fort...

We arrive in Sacramento at noon. Aaron drives us around, showing us the "governor mansion", which doesn't host the governor anymore... We also see Sutter fort. Sutter was a gold-digger (1848). My memory is failing on this... Sutter was with his men (30 ?), and start missing food. He thought his best option was to go on. Finally, they were only a few survivors, all others had died. Here's the fort...

On arrive ensuite au State Capitole. Sacramento est en effet la capitale de la Californie, c'est donc ici que se trouve le centre politique. A noter que le gouverneur n'est pas n'importe qui: Arnold Schwarzenneger!
Next stop is the state capitole. Sacramento is California's capital, so the city is the political center of the state. And guess who's the boss? Arnold Schwarzenneger!

On se rend ensuite au coeur historique de Sacramento: le old town. Constructions d'époque, bien sûr. Et le contraste avec les gratte-ciels à l'arrière-plan est étonnant...
We stop for a while at the historical center of Sacramento: old town. Period constructions, off course. And the opposition to the skycrappers is surprising...

A 14h, on quitte déjà Sacramento. On se dirige vers Fairfield, ou de nombreuses entreprises sont installées. Au programme: visites de Budweiser et JellyBelly. On commence d'ailleurs par la brasserie Anheuser-Busch qui produit entre autres la Budweiser. Ca commence bien, avec dégustation de 2 produits au choix, présentation vidéo et petit jeu. On amorce ensuite la visite de la brasserie, et là, oh déception. Un bref passage dans le hall de mise en bouteille et dans le hall des cuves de fermentation. Et c'est tout... Trop court, trop incomplet, trop "je suis le meilleur, je produis la meilleure bière"... Je leur ai conseillé de venir voir à Liège comment organiser une vraie visite...

At 2pm, we already leave Sacramento. We go to Fairfield, where a lot of companies are settled. Our program: visiting Budweiser and JellyBelly. The first stop is the Anheuser-Busch brewery (one beer brand is Budweiser). It begins very well, with a video introduction and 2 products tasting. Then we start the factory visit, and, ooh disappointment. A short walk in the bottling hall, and one in the fermentation hall, and that's it! Too short, incomplete, too "i'm the best, and i do the best beer"... I told them to come to Liege, and see how to organise a real visit!

Notre deuxième visite nous emmène chez JellyBelly! Mais qu'est-ce que JellyBelly me direz-vous? Le produit le plus connu est une petite sucrerie en forme fève de haricot!! Plus simple, voici l'image...
Our second visit is the JellyBelly factory! But what's JellyBelly? The well-known product is a little candy, shaped like a bean!! But a pic speaks for itself...

Visite très intéressante, on passe à travers tout le processus de production, tout est expliqué en vidéo. Vraiment bien fait, et d'ailleurs élu meilleure visite d'entreprise de l'année. A signaler que les JellyBelly beans ont été rendus populaires par le président Reagan en personne! On termine par la distribution d'échantillons!
Very interesting visit, we can see the full production process, everything is explained in videos. Really well done, and elected "best factory visit of the year". Note that the jellybelly beans were popularised by president Reagan himself. We end the tour by getting free samples.

On termine l'après-midi en rejoignant notre dernier campground situé à Petaluma, à proximité de la Napa Valley. Il s'agit du KOA Petaluma. On monte le camp, et on profite du spa. Hyper agréable! Souper et feu de camp!
We end the afternoon by driving to our last campground, located in Petaluma, close to Napa Valley. It's the Petaluma KOA. We set up camp, and enjoy the spa. Really cool! Dinner, and camp fire.

27-9-2006 Yosemite

Journée nature ce mercredi; nous allons en effet profiter de cette journée pour découvrir Yosemite. Il fait bon, on est bien motivé. On va faire une belle promenade! On commence la journée à Glacier Point (+- 1h de route du camping). On y a un super point de vue sur les sommets de Yosemite, mais aussi sur la vallée...
Day in the nature this wednesday; we spend the all day discovering Yosemite. Weather is nice, we are motivated. We will do a nice hike! We start our day at Glacier Point (+- 1h drive from the campground). From there, you have a fantastic view on the surrounding summits and on the valley...

A partir de là, on entame notre promenade. On s'engage sur le "panorama trail" qui va nous occuper toute la journée. 8 miles, soit 13 km. Les paysages sont superbes, et le parcours nous emmène près des Nevada et Vernal falls. Voici la journée en images...

Promenade à faire, c'est certain, mais soyez préparés. La fin du parcours est en effet très pentue, et comporte une série d'escaliers. Néanmoins, cette journée est un des meilleurs souvenirs de mon séjour. C'est à 17h que nous rentrons à Yosemite village. On fait un barbecue en bord de rivière, et on fait donc les achats d'usage... Avant de s'installer, d'allumer le feu, et nous régaler!
The walk is a "to do" thing, that's for sure, but be prepared. The last part is very steep, and has a number of stairs. Nevertheless, this day is one of my best memories of the tour. We are back at Yosemite village at 5 pm. We do a barbecue tonight, next to the river, so we buy our stuff. Then we set up the fire, and have a good, great BBQ!

On rentre au camp relativement tôt, soirée tranquille...si ce n'est que je suis de plus en plus mal: un bon gros rhûme et un mal de gorge... Je me couche tôt, mais je ne trouve pas le sommeil rapidement! Y aura des nuits meilleures, c'est sur...

Il est tôt ce matin... 6h quand le réveil sonne. Et il fait froid, aussi. Routine quotidienne et en route. Destination: Yosemite (dites Djossémiti). Mais auparavant, deux arrêts au programme: Mono Lake et Bodie. C'est parti...
It's early this morning... 6 when the clock rings. It's cold, again. We do our morning routine and are back on the road. Destination: Yosemite (say Djossémiti). But first, 2 stops on our day program: Mono Lake and Bodie. Let's go!

On part ensuite vers Bodie, village fantôme. Bon, pas de miracle, on sent la "patte US" derrière ce parc. Attention, c'est bien un village abandonné, mais ça fait vraiment piège à touristes.
We leave to go to Bodie, gosht town. Well, no miracle, you can feel the "US touch" behind this park. I mean, it's a really abandonned town, but it's a tourist stuff.

On se rend ensuite dans la vallée. On s'arrête au pied de El capitan. Impressionnant. On observe aussi la première chute d'eau.

25-9-2006 Las Vegas - Bishop

Réveil à 7h ce lundi. Dernière nuit d'hôtel aussi. Petit déjeuner tranquille, il n'y a pas le feu. Chargement, et en route pour notre dernière semaine. Après Toni hier soir, on prend congé de Karyn et Jana.
Wake up at 7 this monday. Last hotel night also. Quiet breakfast, no hurry. We load, and go for our last week. After saying goodbye to Toni yesterday, we also say bye to Karyn and Jana.

Le programme de la journée est simple: Death Valley. La vallée de la mort...Il y a donc un peu de route à faire avant d'arriver sur place. Une fois qu'on y est, on se rend compte de l'immensite du paysage...
Today's program is simple: Death Valley. We have some miles to drive before getting there, but once we are, we can see how big it is...

Si je ne me trompe pas, on débute par le "20 mule team canyon", on fait un peu de tout terrain et on profite de la vue... If i'm right (please correct me if not), we start with the "20 mule team canyon", some off-roading and enjoy the landscape.

On se dirige ensuite vers un des points les plus bas du monde, et en tout cas le point le plus bas du continent: Badwater Basin. Il commence à faire chaud, il fait chaud! 38°!
Our next stop in Death Valley is one of the lowest point on earth, and the lowest point of the continent: Badwater basin. It starts getting hot. IT IS hot. 38°!

On poursuit en direction de Furnace creek, petite pause. L'occasion de photographier la vieille locomotive. We go further to Furnace creek, where we make a pause. A good opportunity to take a pic of the old locomotive.

On quitte le parc en direction de Bishop. On passe par le Stovepipe Wells, et on s'arrête aux Sand Dunes. We leave the park heading to Bishop, we drive through Stovepipe Wells and stop at the Sand Dunes.

Notre dernier arrêt du jour est le "Father Crowley Point". Our last stop at Death Valley is the "Father Crowley point".

Mais la journée n'est pas finie. Après ces paysages étonnant, Aaron nous promet une surprise pour ce soir. On arrive en fin de journée à Bishop, nous nous installons au Brown's Town campground.
But the day is not over yet. After this surprising landscape, Aaron tells us about a surprise for tonight. We arrive at Bishop at the end of the afternoon. We set up camp at the Brown's Town campground.

Avant soirée tranquille, apéro, repas, et puis vient le moment de la surprise. On doit se mettre en maillot (il est 20H30!), prendre notre essuie et s'installer dans le van. En route! Aaron nous mène à l'écart de la ville, et après quelques minutes nous sommes sur place. On va profiter d'un "jaccuzi" naturel, si je puis dire. L'eau est chaude, et différents bassins naturels autorisent la baignade. Et donc, dans le noir, vers 21h, au milieu de nulle part, instant relaxation...
We have a really quiet evening, relax, aperitif, dinner. Then comes the "surprise time". Aaron asks us to put our swimsuit, and jump in the van. So be it! Aaron drives us away of the city, and some minutes after, we are at the spot! We will enjoy a natural jaccuzi, if i can say it that way. Water is hot, there are some ponds, it allows us to bath quietly, at night, in the middle of nowhere...

Deuxième jour à Las Vegas. Lendemain de la veille... Petite g**** de bois. Couché à 3h, et debout à 7h! Pour une raison toute simple: je saute en parachute ce matin! Je suis le seul du groupe à le faire, et donc tout le monde dort et récupère pendant que je vais faire l'andouille dans les airs ;) J'ai rendez-vous à 7h45 au MonteCarlo pour prendre la navette. En route direction Jean, à environ 1/2h de Vegas. Là-bas, formalités administratives: formulaire d'abandon de recours, prise de connaissance des consignes de sécurité, absence d'assurance... Tout va bien! Sur le coup de 11h30, on monte dans le coucou et en route pour les sensations!
Second day in Vegas. The day after the party... Hangover. Went to bed at 3am, and i wake up at 7. Why would you ask...Well, i go skydiving today, and i have to be at meeting point (MonteCarlo) at 7h45. I'm the only one of the group doing this, so everybody is resting while i'm going to do this crazy thing...! We drive to Jean, about 1/2h away from Vegas. Check in, security advice, liability waiver, no insurance,... Cool stuff! Around 11h30, i get the green light, we go the (small) plane and...Here we go!
Le film qui suit représente exactement ce que j'ai vécu, même lieu, même accompagnateur (Kevin Purdy)... Le seul truc, je ne me suis pas encore transformé en blonde! Par contre, je ne sais quel logiciel utiliser pour convertir mon dvd...Voici donc Renée, à Jean...
The next movie is exactly the same as what i did; same place, same guide (Kevin Purdy)...The only thing to know is that i'm not a blond girl. I simply don't know how to convert my dvd into a mpg... So, here's Renée, in Jean.

Assez étonnament, ce n'est pas plus impressionnant que ça... Le seul moment à sensations je dirais, c'est juste la sortie de l'avion. Le reste étant une lente descente.
Surprisingly, it's not that frightening... The only "scary" moment is when you jump out of the plane. The remaining is just a slow glide to the ground.
Je suis récupéré à 13h par le reste du groupe; direction Circus Circus pour un diner buffet.

On se dirige ensuite vers une des attractions de Vegas, la Stratosphere Tower. 300 mètres de haut, un restaurant panoramique, des attractions... Un édifice à l'image de Vegas. La voici en image. Remarquez, sur la flèche, l'attraction... C'est le big shot! On voit mieux en agrandissant...

Outre la vue magnifique que voici, la stratosphère tower comble donc les amateurs de sensations fortes. Stratosphere tower is a must-do for people looking for sensations, but it also offers a great view on Vegas.

Retour maintenant vers le Big Shot...Ca par contre, c'est beaucoup plus effrayant que le parachute. Se retrouver projetté dans les airs à 45 miles par heure, se prendre 4g d'accélération...On se sent vivre!
Back now to Big Shot! This one is really more impressive than the skydive. Being thrown in the air at 45 miles/hour, in a 4g acceleration...Banzaiii!

Le temps passe, et nous remontons le strip (en taxi d'abord) et on s'arrête au Venitian, un des plus gros hôtels...
Time is running, and we go up the strip (with a cab first) and stop at the venitian, one of the biggest hotel...

Arrêt photo à Margaritaville ensuite. Aaahh Margaritaville! Le pays de Jimmy Buffet. Vous ne connaissez pas, et c'est normal, il n'est pas vraiment connu ici. Mais je peux vous dire, pour l'avoir écouté durant tout le voyage, que sa musique sent bon les vacances! A écouter et découvrir ici et ici.
Picture stop in Margaritaville. Aaaaah Margaritaville! Jimmy Buffet's place! If you don't know him, it's normal, as he is not really famous here. But i can say, after listening to him all the trip, it's good music, and it has a holiday taste! To listen and discover here and here.

On passe le reste de la soirée sur le strip, repas, photos diverses, mais je dois avouer que l'esprit n'est plus le même que la veille... Tout le monde est fatigué, et puis cette soirée marque aussi la fin de l'aventure pour Toni, Karyn et Jana. Leur tour (gold rush) s'arrête ici.
We spend the evening on the strip, having dinner, taking pics, enjoying Vegas for the last time. But we are not in the same mood tonight. Everybody is tired, and it's also the last night for some of us. Toni, Karyn & Jana are leaving, as their tour (gold rush) is over...

Voila, Vegas c'est fini... Mais bon sang que c'était bon!

Samedi. Fin de deuxième semaine. Déjà...
Mais c'est aussi un des meilleurs moments du voyage! Cet après-midi, on a rendez-vous avec la ville ou tout est possible. Là ou on dit "Ce qui se passe à Vegas, reste à Vegas!".
Gagné, en route pour LAS VEGAS!
Saturday. End of second week. Already...
But it is also one of the best moment of the trip! This afternoon, we meet the city where everything is possible. The city where people say: "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!"
Yes, let's go to LAS VEGAS!
Mais revenons au début de journée... Au réveil, on est encore plus satisfaits d'avoir dormi à l'hôtel. Il a fait -6° cette nuit...
But let's go back to the start... At the wake up, we are really happy with our hotel room... It was really cold outside: -6°!

Notre trajet nous fait passer par Red Canyon, puis comme prévu Zion NP. Route scénique (les USA sont vraiment fort pour ça). Le trail que Aaron voulait nous faire faire est malheureusement fermé pour travaux... Et comme le temps est compté, nous nous contenterons de la traversée et du visitor center.
Our road takes us through Red Canyon, and later on Zion NP. Scenic way (USA are really good in that). The trail Aaron would have liked us to do, is closed for work. And as our time there is not so long, we will only drive through the park and go to visitor center.

Et maintenant, en route pour la cité du jeu! Une fois sur place, c'est l'occasion de la traditionnelle photo de groupe :) Une de mes préférées...

Passage ensuite par les outlets...On sort ce soir, et il faut bien s'habiller, non? Direction l'hôtel, l'America Best Value Inn. Situé sur Tropicana, à proximité du MGM. Temps libre, repas avant de découvrir la ville de nuit.
We go to the outlets, we need to get dressed for tonight! We then go and register at the hotel, America Best Value Inn. On Tropicana, close to MGM. Free time, dinner before seeing Vegas by night.

20h...Ce soir, on met les petits plats dans les grands! On a loué une limousine (obligé, à Vegas). C'est Aaron qui doit nous en faire la surprise. Mais avant, photo de groupe à nouveau... Regardez, qu'on est tous beaux! ;)

On se rend à la Freemont Street experience pour commencer. Réellement impressionnant! Une rue couverte, dorénavant fermée à la circulation et ou, chaque soir, est projeté un film d'animation sur écran géant. Aussi géant que le toit recouvrant Freemont!

22-9-2006 Moab - Bryce Canyon

Pour changer, il a plu cette nuit sur Moab. Et il pleut encore ce matin. Pas l'idéal en camping, ni pour manger, ni pour replier les tentes. Mais ça se calme et on peut entrer en action sans être "rincés". Il est 9h, et Bryce canyon nous attend. On nous annonce du grand froid, et la journée va être intéressante sur ce point. Le premier point d'intérêt sur la route est Capitol Reef NP. On ne fait que le traverser (à la japonaise diraient certains). On s'arrête néanmoins au "Fremont Petroglyphs".
It was a rainy night, and it's still raining this morning. Not usual, but... It's not ideal when you're camping, neither for breakfast nor for getting the tents down. But it turns to light rain, so we can act without getting "soaked". It's 9, and Bryce canyon is waiting for us! We know it's gonna be really cold up there, and the day will be ...interesting on that point. The first interesting spot on the road is Capitol Reef NP. We only drive through (like japanese, as some may say). We still stop at "Fremont Petroglyphs".

On continue notre route. La grande question du jour est de savoir si Aaron va nous trouver soit des cabines, soit...autre chose, mais le but est de passer la nuit au chaud! On s'arrête pour faire le plein et dîner. Petit passage par le Subway du coin. Lorsque l'on quitte l'endroit, Suntrek appelle Aaron...mais la communication coupe aussitôt! On n'est pas dans les montagnes pour rien...
We go on... The question of the day: will Aaron find us a cabin or anything else but hot? We stop for gas and lunch. Again some subway for me. When we leave, Aaron get a call...which goes down immediately! Things happen when you are driving in the mountains...

Notre prochain arrêt est le Grand Staircase Escalante. The next stop is Grand Staircase escalante.

Au milieu de Dixie National forest (peut-être pas le milieu, mais là ou il n'y a rien d'autre), on trouve un magasin et Oh bonheur une cabine téléphonique. On va savoir ce que Suntrek voulait nous dire... Jackpot (pas encore à Vegas pourtant), nous avons des chambres d'hôtel à Bryce! On passera donc nos 3 prochaines nuits dans un vrai lit!
In the middle of Dixie National Forest (well, yeah, maybe not in the middle, but where you can't find anything else) , we see a shop and Oh miracle a phone booth! We will know what suntrek has to tell us... Jackpot (and we're not in Vegas yet), we have hotel rooms in Bryce! For the next 3 nights, we will have a nice, comfortable bed!

On arrive vers 14h à Bryce, on retire les clés des chambres et...oooops! Aaron a perdu son portefeuille. Sérieux problème, car si il se trouve au dernier arrêt, il y en a pour un peu plus de 2h de route, aller-retour. Sachant que les navettes de bus ne roulent pas à cette saison, ça signifie: pas de Bryce canyon. La douche froide.
We arrive at Bryce around 2pm, we get room keys and....oooops! Aaron has lost is wallet. Big problem; if it is at the last stop, the drive there and back is 2h. As the bus shuttle are off for the season, it only means one thing: no bryce canyon!
Heureusement, on retrouve le portefeuille à Bryce, sur le parking...Ouf!

Nous pouvons donc nous rendre dans Bryce Canyon. On commence par un trail de Bryce point à Sunset Point. Ce qui nous permet de découvrir les amphithéatres! Quel spectacle, quelle beauté...Impressionnant!
We can go to Bryce Canyon. We start with a trail, from Bryce Point to Sunset Point, which allows us to discover the amphitheaters, the hoodoos. Beautiful, impressive, fantastic!

Il y a du vent, il fait frais. On a le choix: faire un hike, ou aller en van à un point de vue. On se sépare,je choisis l'option hike. Après tout, on est là pour ça non? On marche donc dans le canyon de sunset point à sunrise point. Ce qui nous permet d'apprécier encore plus ce parc aux couleurs éblouissantes.
It's windy, cold. We have 2 options: do a hike, or go to a viewpoint with the van. We split, i chose the hike. That's why we are here :) So we walk in the canyon from sunset to sunrise point. We can really appreciate the dazzling colors of the park.

Retour vers 20h, direction resto, et bon burger. On était plus ambitieux, mais vu la file au buffet, on s'est rabattu sur le classique! Petite séance internet ensuite (d'ou j'ai posté ceci: message). Retour à l'hôtel ou on se retrouve tous dans notre chambre: au programme: les goonies et punk'd, rhum et baileys...Que du bonheur :)
We are back at the town at 8pm. We go to the restaurant, and have a good burger. We had more ambitions tonight, but the queue at the buffet was too long, so chose for the classic! Internet after that (i posted this: message). Back at the hotel, where we all meet in my room. Program: goonies, punk'd, rhum, baileys... Only happiness ;) (but why did the girls leave? :) )

21-9-2006 Arches NP - Hummer Ride

Jeudi 21, avec le retour d'une météo favorable. Du moins il ne pleut plus et le ciel semble dégagé. On poursuit la visite de Arches NP aujourd'hui. Prévu ce matin: le primitive trail, du côté de Devil's garden. Une marche de plus ou moins 7 miles.
Thursday the 21st, the weather is favorable again. At least, it has stopped raining & the sky is clear. We go further with Arches NP today; on our schedule is Primitive trail, a 7 miles walk. It's in the Devil's garden area.

Sur notre chemin, on a rencontré quelques obstacles (tronc d'arbre à "escalader", point d'eau à contourner...)

Après la Landscape arch, emblématique du parc, nous allons dans la Windows Section. Et avant de se rendre au pied de celles-ci, nous dînons...sur le van!

On va ensuite vers les North & South windows, et Turret Arch.

En se retournant, on peut apercevoir "cove of caves", "double arch"...

On se rend ensuite au visitor center, ou nous visionnons le film du parc. Retour au camp, ou nous avons un peu de temps libre avant de faire le Hummer ride. Et à 17 heures, c'est parti pour 2h30 de sensations fortes! L'engin en question a fait la première guerre du golfe (en 91 donc). Capacités de franchissement exceptionnelles. Je n'ai pas retenu toutes les données chiffrées, mais on a fait du 60° frontal, et je pense avoir mémorisé qu'il peut endurer du 30° latéral...Nous allons dans un endroit très connu de tous les amateurs de 4x4. Une séquence accident-extreme a d'ailleurs fait le tour du monde. Sensations, disions-nous?
We then go to the visitor center to see the park's movie. Back at camp, we have some free time before the Hummer Ride. At 5pm, we are gone for 2h30 of sensations! The hummer is an old army one, it did the first gulf war (in 1991). Its off-road possibilities are exceptionnal. I didn't remember all the data, but we made some up/down at 60°, and i think i'm right if i say it can go through a 30° lateral slope...We go at a very famous spot for all 4x4 lovers. An extreme-crash-movie has been broadcasted worldwide. Sensations, were we saying?

Le circuit se termine vers 19h30, dans le froid et sous une pluie fine... Au menu ce soir: taco shells, bon repas encore. Nouveau feu de camp. On termine la soirée avec un team de cheerleaders (Deb & Rianne): we got a A, we got a A...A-A-R-O-N !

Après une nuit très venteuse, le réveil sonne à 6h. Avec Patrick, on démonte rapidement la tente, on déjeune... On a donc tout le temps pour profiter du sunrise (sachant que l'on doit charger à 8h). Spectacle superbe, un ciel bleu foncé pour commencer, qui devient ciel de feu... Magnifique!
After a really windy night, we wake up at 6. We take the tent down, have breakfast... So we have a lot of time to enjoy sunrise (we have to load at 8). Dark blue sky, then fire-like colors...Magnificent!!

A 8h, comme prévu, on charge le van. On se rend à Moab aujourd'hui. Avant d'attaquer les choses sérieuses, petit photo stop pour le Mexican Hat...

Arrivés à Moab, on s'installe au Canyonlands campground (juste derrière la station Texaco). Les choses sérieuses... Parlons-en! Canyonlands NP. La météo n'est pas extraordinaire , le temps est orageux. On commence par le Grand View Point, qui nous offre une vue d'ensemble...
Arrived at Moab, we set up camp at the Canyonlands Campground (located just rear of the Texaco gas station). The serious stuff, let's talk about it now! Canyonlands NP. The weather is not so good today, it's stormy. We start at the Grand View Point, which give us a large view.

On poursuit avec le upheaval dome. Un regard sur le ciel nous indique que la pluie arrive...

Un autre incontournable de ce parc, le Deadhorse point! Nous y faisons une photo de groupe et profitons du paysage.

Nous devions aussi faire Mesa Arch, mais vu la météo, pour ne pas hypothéquer le reste de l'après-midi, Aaron décidé de ne pas y aller. Nous nous rendons pour la première fois à Arches National Park. But: un petit trail pour aller à la Délicate Arch. Malheureusement, il se met à pleuvoir alors que nous arrivons au pied de l'arche. On ne reste donc pas longtemps...
We should also have done Mesa Arch. Because of the weather, and in order not to jeopardize the rest of the day, Aaron decides to skip it. For the first time, we go to Arches NP. We have a short walk to Delicate Arch. Unfortunately, it starts raining just as we arrive at the arch. We don't stay for a long time...

Ce soir, nous ne faisons pas à manger; certains achètent des salades, d'autres vont au Subway (je choisis un meatball marinara, bien bon: demi-baguette fourrée de petites boulettes sauce tomate, salade,...). On rentre au camp. Feu, jeu, rires, une bonne soirée!
No cooking tonight. Some of us buy some salads, other ones go to Subway (i buy a meatball marinara, really good: bread filled with small meatballs with tomato saus, salad...). We go back to camp. Fire, games, laughs, a good night!

Nuit froide à nouveau, bien compensée par une bonne douche bien chaude ce matin! Petit déjeuner, chargement et en route pour le Far West! Direction: Monument Valley! Aaron nous fait une nouvelle "surprise" ce matin... Sur la route, il nous mène au Navajo National Monument (un peu avant Kayenta).
Cold night again, balanced by a good, hot shower this morning! Breakfast, loading, and here we go, direction: Far West, Monument Valley! We have another "Aaron surprise" today, on our way, he stops at Navajo National Monument (close to Kayenta).

Nous arrivons tôt à Monument Valley, avec un premier stop au visitor center. Direction ensuite le campground, où nous nous installons juste façe aux buttes, ce qui nous promet un beau lever de soleil...
We arrive early at Monument Valley, and make a first stop at the visitor center. We then set up camp just in front of the buttes! Nice spot for tomorrow's sunrise!

On commence l'après midi par un trail, le wildcat trai, marche de 3,2 miles contournant la West Mitten Butte. Il fait grand soleil, chaud, un vrai bonheur!
We begin the afternoon with a trail, the wildcat trail, a 3,2 miles walk around West Mitten Butte. It's sunny, warm, a really nice moment!

On a ensuite une petite heure de libre au camp, avant de faire le jeep tour. Un peu avant 17h, on se met en route pour 3 heures de jeep dans un décor...impressionnant! De Wild Wild West, à Retour vers le futur 3, Supercopter, des pubs, westerns etc... Le plus grand des studios de tournage. Guidés par "just kidding" Marvin.
Back from the trail, we have one hour at camp before the next activity, the jeep tour. A short time before 5pm, we begin our 3 hour-ride in one of the most impressive landscape! From Wild Wild West, to Back to the future 3, Airwolf, adds, westerns,... The biggest natural studio! Guided by "just kidding" Marvin.

On s'arrête à plusieurs endroits, et notamment pour observer le travail de tissage, réalisé sous nos yeux par une Navajo de 87 ans. On nous explique aussi l'utilité d'un objet: il sert comme peigne. Toni et Anouk se font coiffer.
We stop at various points. We get to see how Navajos are weaving, done by a 87 years old Navajo. We also learn what some objects are made for... The old women also does Toni & Anouk's hair.

On profite pleinement du moment... On observe le coucher de soleil, avant de revenir, sur le coup de 19h au campground. Audrey et Rianne au fourneau, soirée tranquille.
We really enjoy the moment... We have sunset there, before going back to campground at 7 pm. Audrey & Rianne are cooking tonight. Quiet, talking evening.

Début de 2eme semaine. Et nuit toujours froide...Réveil vers 7h. Sachant que nous partons vers 9h, j'ai largement le temps de téléphoner. Hélas...carte téléphonique en rade! Je vous passe les détails, mais les 2h ont été bien remplies! Au final, une carte opérationnelle. Derniers moments à Grand Canyon au desert view point, en image...
Start of the 2nd week. And a cold night again... Waking up at 7. We leave at 9, so enough to call Belgium, right? Well, as long as the phone card works...Anyway, at 9 it was working, and we were leaving the camp. Last moments at Grand Canyon, at the desert view point. Here are the pics...

La route nous appelle à nouveau. A vrai dire, c'est encore assez plaisant de rouler. Les paysages sont incroyables, variés... Rien à voir avec nos routes belges. Aujourd'hui, nous passons dans le Arizona Painted desert...
On the road again! But to be honest, it's really cool. Landscapes are so nice, different... It is completely different than belgian roads. Today, for instance, we drive through Arizona Painted desert...

Le lunch stop du jour nous amène à un endroit perdu, au milieu de nulle part. Mais représentatif du décor du sud ouest: le Horseshoe bend. Again today,for lunch, we stop in the middle of nowhere. But it is representative of the southwest: we are at horseshoe bend!

On continue dans ce décor magnifique. Nouvelle découverte: Antelope Canyon. On est un peu en dehors de l'horaire idéal mais ça reste étonnant à voir. Nous sommes au pays Navajo, c'est l'un d'entre eux qui nous fait visiter...
We go on in this magnificent scenery... New discovery: Antelope Canyon. We are a bit late on the best visit time, but it's still amazing! We are in the Navajo land, one of them is our guide...

C'est ensuite le Lake Powell que nous découvrons, une petite partie du moins. A proximité immédiate de la Glenn Canyon Dam. Plus haute que la Hoover dam! On profite du soleil pendant une heure, relax... Petite balade sur les rochers. Puis départ pour notre camp du jour: paria campground! Perdu, au calme, et comme souvent, au milieu de nulle part!
Coming next is Lake Powell, let's say a small part of it. Close to Glen Canyon Dam, which btw is higher than Hoover dam. We enjoy the sun, relax... We walk on the rocks. Then we leave for our day's campground: paria campground. Quiet, and as usual, in the middle of nowhere...!

Deuxième journée à Grand Canyon. Réveil très tôt aujourd'hui: 5h00! On souhaite en effet profiter du lever de soleil. Il fait froid, comme prévu; cette nuit on a eu... 0°! On prépare nos sacs et on se dirige vers l'arrêt de bus. D'après le journal du parc, la navette doit passer à 5h45. On l'a attendue 1/4h. Il est donc 6 heures quand on embarque. On rate de peu les premiers rayons de soleil. La vue n'en reste pas moins magnifique...
Second day at Grand Canyon. Early waking up today: 5 am! We want to see sunrise. It's cold, as we thought it would be... Tonight, we had... 0°! We get our backpacks ready and go to the bus stop. Following the park gazette report, the shuttle should be there at 5.45. We had to wait until 6 to get it! We miss the first sunrays. But the view is magnificent...

On retourne ensuite au camp, ou on se débarrasse de ce dont on a pas besoin pour le hike prévu ce matin. On déjeune, puis on va à market plaza. Chocolat chaud, achat d'un bonnet, d'une carte de téléphone. Rianne et Audrey, et Debby téléphonent aux PB. Je musarde, profite du soleil qui lentement nous réchauffe. Vers 9h30, on se met en route, direction Bright Angel trail. Bien sur, hors de question de descendre au fond du canyon: on n'a ni l'entraînement, ni le temps pour cela.
We go back to the campground, where we get rid of the unnecessary for the morning hike. We have breakfast and go to market plaza. Time for a hot chocolate, i also buy a cap, a phone card. Audrey & Rianne, Debby phone home. I relax, enjoying the morning sun which warms us up. Around 9.30, we go to Bright Angel trail. Off course, we don't intend to reach the bottom of the Canyon. We aren't trained for it, and we don't have time for it.

C'était facile de descendre, la remontée est plus dure! Bien fatigués, vers 13h, on est de retour! Promenade un peu frustrante, en ce sens que l'on voit peu de choses puisque fort logiquement, on serpente sur la même paroi...On fait une pause sandwich avant de rejoindre le camp. Douche et repos. Retour vers l'héliport pour une nouvelle tentative de vol. Cette fois, c'est la bonne et en route pour 45 minutes de vol!
It was easy to get down, and off course, the way up is harder! Tired, at 1 pm, we are back on top. Frustrating walk, as we don't get so much to see. Not unexpected, as we keep walking up/down the same face... We had a lunch pause before going back to camp. Shower, rest. We go back to the heliport for our second trial. This time, it's ok. We get it! 45 min flight!

Retour au camp vers 18h30; ce soir je cuisine avec Patrick: chili con carne! On termine la soirée par un feu de camp, comme hier. Cette fois agrémenté d'un petit "jeu": "I never, never..." (je n'ai jamais,non jamais...). Le reste est top secret!
Back at the campground around 6.30 pm. Tonight, i cook with Patrick: chili con carne! We end the evening with a campfire, like yesterday... We also play a "game": "I never, never..." The rest is "Top secret" :)

Ca y est, nous sommes donc à Grand Canyon! Mais nous n'en avons encore rien vu. Pour nous ménager la surprise, Aaron a une idée: bandez vous les yeux!
That's it, we are in Grand Canyon! But we haven't seen anything yet! To keep us entertained and allow us to be really amazed by the view, Aaron asks us to cover our eyes.

Aussitôt dit, aussitôt fait! Asked, and done!
AAron nous sort un à un du van, nous conduit au bord du canyon et...Incroyable vue! One by one, Aaron gets us out of the van, and brings us to the edge and...What an amazing view!

Après ça, on se dirige vers le Mather's campground pour nous installer. On a un peu plus d'une heure devant nous avant de nous rendre à l'héliport. Notre survol du canyon est en effet prévu cet après-midi.
After this we go to Mather's campground where we set up camp. We have a little more than an hour before going to the heliport. Our canyon flight is scheduled this afternoon.

Malheureusement, Papillon est en retard aujourd'hui...Trop que pour nous permettre de voler! La séance est donc reportée au lendemain (en espérant que cette fois tout se passe bien!). Pas bien grave, ça va nous permettre d'être dans les temps pour le coucher de soleil. Unfortunately, Papillon is behind it's schedule...Too much to allow us to flight! We book again for tomorrow, hoping that it will be ok! Not a big problem in fact... It allows us to be on time for sunset. We get some pizza at the village and go to Yavapai point, and enjoy the last moments of the day...

Belle journée aujourd'hui. On quitte Lake Havasu pour se rendre dans un des lieux mythiques du Southwest: le Grand Canyon! Pour ce faire, on passe notamment par un autre endroit bien connu, au nom évocateur: la route 66!
Great day today. We leave Lake Havasu to go to one of the most beautiful spot of the Southwest: grand canyon! Doing so, we go through another famous road, known worldwide: US Route 66!

Longue de 4000 km, joignant Chicago à Santa Monica, et traversant 8 états. Nous nous arrêtons à Seligman.

Pas grand chose à voir... Si ce n'est le fameux Snowcap! Vous avez certainement aperçu ce fast-food au détour d'un reportage télé consacré à la 66.

On quitte la Californie aujourd'hui, et on entre en Arizona. Route assez longue, sous le soleil. Il fait chaud à l'extérieur, le van indique 35°. On en profite pour se reposer, admirer le paysage...

Au passage, on voit aussi de nombreux Joshua trees... We also discover the Joshua trees.

On se rapproche de Lake Havasu. Avant d'arriver, Aaron nous fait passer dans un autre camping utilisé par Suntrek, en bord de rivière cette fois. Mais nous ne restons pas et poursuivons jusqu'au Crazyhorse Campground. Nous sommes au bord du lac, l'eau est chaude, il fait grand soleil. On décharge en 4eme vitesse, on monte les tentes, on enfile les maillots...et plouf! A l'eau!
We get closer to Lake Havasu. But before, Aaron drives us through another campground used by Suntrek, next to the river. Off course, we don't stay there et go further to Crazyhorse Campground. We are on the lake, water is hot, it's really sunny. We unload really quickly, we set up camp, get our swimsuits and...Go, jump in the water!

On passe l'avant soirée à discuter, prendre l'apéro, et écouter Aaron.
We stay on the "beach" talking, having a drink, and listening to Aaron.

Après souper, on se rend à pied au London Bridge. Typiquement américain! C'est donc l'histoire d'un riche citoyen américain qui souhaite racheter le tower bridge de Londres. Mais il fait erreur, les anglais vendent un pont...normal. Tant pis, l'américain transporte et reconstruit malgré tout le pont aux USA! Le london bridge est installé!
After dinner, we walk to London Bridge. A real american story! A rich american decides to buy London's tower bridge. But in fact, England is not selling that one. He still gets it, brings it back to USA, and build it again there. London bridge is born!

Nous passons la journée à San Diego aujourd'hui. Au choix, Seaworld, Zoo, downtown... Ayant déjà vu Seaworld à Orlando et n'ayant par ailleurs pas envie de passer la journée au zoo, j'opte donc pour downtown. J'aime assez l'idée de passer du temps au centre-ville. Ca permet de se faire une idée de l'atmosphère qui y règne, de voir l'architecture. Bref, de voir la ville! Je passe donc la matinée à déambuler...
We stay in San Diego today. We have various options:Seaworld, zoo, downtown... I went to seaworld orlando last year, and i don't want to go to the zoo for the all day, that's why i have decided to go downtown! I like the idea of being there, in the city center, seeing what happens, looking at the architecture. Let's say feel the city!

Aaron me dépose sur Harbor Drive, près de l'embarcadero. C'est à cet endroit que l'on peut observer différents navires de guerre récents (USS Midway) et plus anciens...

Je remonte ensuite broadway et passe de rue en rue. Gratte-ciels, immeubles plus modestes. Vielles constructions. Un beau mélange donc!

Je découvre ensuite le gaslamp district de jour. Pubs, commerces, un chouette endroit! The next place i see is the gaslamp district. Pubs, shops, a really nice place!

Mais l'heure avance et je me ré-oriente vers le seaport village. Par hasard, je tombe sur le bistrot qui a servi dans Top Gun!But time is running, and i'm now going to seaport village. By chance, i find the pub where Top Gun was taped!

J'y rentre et commande à boire. Quel décor! I get in and get a drink. What a setting!

Je décide ensuite de me rendre au Top of the Hyatt. Il s'agit d'un café panoramique, au sommet d'une des tours du Hyatt. Malheureusement, je suis un peu tôt, il n'ouvre qu'à 15h. Pas de chance! Je vais donc directement au seaport village, ou j'enregistre un post audio (à écouter ici) et ou Aaron vient me récupérer. I decide to move to the Top of the Hyatt, a panoramic pub at the top of one of the Hyatt's tower. Unfortunately, i'm a bit too early as it only opens at 3pm. So i go further to Seaport village, where i record an audiopost (listen here) and where Aaron will pick me up.

A 14h, Aaron me récupère et ...petit problème...Sur la route de retour du supermarché, une bouteille de vin a décidé de s'échapper. Chute et bris de verre, vin dans le van. Les filles ne seront pas contentes! Bref... On se rend à Mission beach pour 2 heures relax au soleil. On récupère ensuite ceux qui sont allés à Seaworld (Patrick, Debby, Jana,Toni, Karyn, Karine,Clara) et on revient sur mission beach. A 18h, on récupère Rianne et Audrey au zoo. Retour au camp, repas. Et en soirée, on sort dans le Gaslamp district. On s'amuse bien, musique live, bien!
At 2pm, Aaron picks me up, but...we have a problem. On his way back from the grocery, one bottle of wine decided it was enough! Fall, and badaboum badabang, wine in the van! The girls won't be happy! Anyway... We go to Mission beach, where we relax, at the sun...At 4, we go and pick the other ones at seaworld (Pat, Debby, Jana, Toni, Karyn, Karine,Clara) & go back to mission beach. At 6pm, we pick audrey and rianne at the zoo and go back to camp. Dinner. At night, we go to a pub in the gaslamp district. Live music, drinks, fun...a good evening!

Dernier jour à Los Angeles; on quitte donc le camp ce matin. Mais avant de mettre le cap au sud, il reste pas mal de choses à voir. On doit commencer par une balade de Malibu à Venice. Mais l'humidité ambiante (moisture comme on dit là-bas) change notre programme. On se rend directement à Venice beach. Il est tôt (10h30), et donc il n'y a pas encore grand chose à voir...
Last day in LA; we change campground today. Before going further south, there is still a lot to see. We are supposed to begin with a walk from Malibu to Venice. But the weather, the moisture as they say, changes our day. We go directly to Venice beach. It's early (10h30), so, not so much to see...

Quand on parle de Malibu, de Venice, comment ne pas penser à "Alerte à Malibu"! Ce d'autant plus que depuis le début du tour, nous avons instauré le principe de "la chanson du matin". Et devinez? C'est le générique d'Alerte à Malibu qui s'est imposé! Donc, chaque matin, dans le van, c'est...Alerte à Malibu (rendez-vous le dernier jour pour la vidéo).
When we talk about Malibu, Venice, there is no way to avoid "Baywatch"!Moreover, since the begin of the tour, we have what we call a "morning song". And guess what? Baywatch theme is our song! So, each morning, in the van, is Baywatch time! (you'll get the video on the last day of the tour)

On se promène de Venice à Santa Monica. La plage est déserte, mais il fait bon, le soleil commence à briller. On fait une petite pause café, avant de rejoindre le célèbre Santa Monica Pier.
We walk from Venice to Santa Monica. The beach is empty, but the weather is OK, the sun is shining again. We have a "coffie pause". Then we go to the famous Santa Monica Pier.

Il est presque midi. Nous quittons Santa Monica et allons sur Rodeo Drive. Les grands noms de la mode ont un point de vente: Versace, Dolce et Gabbana,... C'est là également que l'on trouve l'hôtel ayant servi lors du tournage de Pretty Woman. On aperçoit également quelques (!) véhicules de luxe: Mercedes McLaren SLR, Ferrari, Maserati...Inutile de rêver! On se rend ensuite dans les quartiers de Beverly Hills, avec passage (pas arrêt) devant l'ancienne demeure de Brad Pitt-Jennifer Aniston.
It's almost 12.00. We leave Santa Monica and go to Rodeo Drive. Big fashion names have salespoint there: Versace, Dolce & Gabbana,... Il est ensuite temps de quitter Los Angeles. Nous partons par Melrose Avenue. Trois heures de route pour rejoindre San Diego. Now, it's time to leave LA. We drive through Melrose Avenue. 3 hours drive to go to San Diego.

Notre premier arrêt à San Diego est le Old Town, ou tout a commencé pour San Diego. Our first stop in San Diego is the Old Town, where everything started.

Malheureusement, on arrive quasi à la fermeture (17h). Nous ne restons donc qu'une petite demi-heure sur place. On termine la journée en installant le camp, au KOA San Diego (à Chula Vista). Piscine, lavoir, Point cuisine, électricité, sanitaires gratuits. Au menu ce soir: barbecue by the Dutchies.

Unfortunately, we arrive late, almost closing time (17h). So we only stay 1/2 hour there. We end the day by setting up camp, at the KOA San Diego (in Chula Vista). Swimming pool, laundry, kitchen set, power, free bathroom. On the menu tonight: BBQ by the Dutchies!

Programme du jour: Universal Studio, Griffith Park, Hollywood Boulevard.
Déjeuner sous le soleil avant de faire la route (1h) vers Universal.

On passe donc la journée à Universal. Il y en a un peu pour tout le monde: les enfants,
We spend the day at Universal, where everybody can find something they like. Children,

les ados, les grands enfants... Par contre, j'ai trouvé le nombre d'attractions assez limité. Histoire d'éviter la cohue, nous avons commencé la journée par le studio tour.
Teenagers, adults... But i think there aren't so many attractions. To avoid the crowd, we decide to begin with the studio tour.

On passe ainsi (en petit train, faut pas rêver!) entre les différents bâtiments qui abritent les tournages de films et séries. Ici par exemple, le studio 25 des Experts Las Vegas

notre visite s'achève. Et avant de retourner en ville, nous passons par le Griffith Park, ou se trouve l'observatoire (pas encore ouvert au public). On peut aussi observer les gratte-ciels de LA et le Hollywood Sign!
Our visit ends. But before going back in the city, we go to Griffith Park, where the observatory is located (not open yet to the public). You can also see downtown LA skyline, Hollywood sign!

Un passage obligé à LA, mais assez décevant. Bien sur, il y a les étoiles,
A must see in LA, but a little bit disappointing. Off course you can see the stars,

le Kodak Theatre, etc...

Mais c'est un boulevard comme un autre, il n'y a rien de spécial, il n'est pas mieux entretenu que le reste de la ville. Il n'y a donc pas lieu d'y passer des heures...
But it is a normal boulevard, there is nothing special... The city doesn't care more about it than any other place. So, there is no need to spend hours there...

La nuit a été froide, mais j'ai quand même mieux dormi. Réveil à 6h30, et routine matinale familière depuis l'an dernier: douche (quand c'est possible), déjeuner, démontage et chargement du van. Il fait ensoleillé, et je profite de mon temps pour poster un audioblog (le seul qui a fonctionné!). Courte route en direction de Monterey. On passe notamment devant l'entrée du circuit de Laguna Seca. A Monterey, nous faisons une petite balade le long de la mer.

On se dirige ensuite vers le Fisherman's wharf local.

Endroit agréable...

The night was cold, but i slept better than the first night. I wake up at 6.30, and i'm back in a routine i learned last year: shower (when possible), breakfast, bringing the tents down and van loading. It's sunny this morning, and i take some time to post an audioblog (the only that will work!) Short drive to Monterey. We pass along the Laguna Seca racetrack. In Monterey, we begin with a short walk along the sea, before going to the local Fischerman's wharf. Nice place...

On se dirige ensuite vers Santa Barbara. Ville de plus ou moins 100 000 habitants. Arrêt devant une mission, balade downtown, plage. Une ville "classe"... After that, we go to Santa Barbara. City of approx. 100 000 inhabitants. We stop at a mission, we walk downtown, on the beach. A top city...

On se dirige alors vers notre camp, au Malibu Creek State Park. C'est notamment là qu'a été filmée la série MASH. Au menu, préparé par Patrick et votre serviteur, des borito's. On veille jusque minuit, boissons, musique (Aaron à la guitare)...Bonne soirée!

The last stop is our night camp, at the Malibu Creek State Park. The tv show MASH was filmed there. On the menu tonight, cooked by Patrick and myself, borito's. We enjoy the evening until midnight, having beers, listening to Aaron. A good evening!

10-9-2006 San Francisco - Santa Cruz

Première journée du tour ce dimanche. Chargement prévu vers 8h. Nuit un peu agitée, réveil tous les 1/4 heures. Après le petit déjeuner, les vans de Suntrek arrivent. On répartit les passagers. Comme annoncé par Suntrek il y a quelques jours, nous sommes 15 pour le southwest, plus les participants au Gold Rush (arrêt à Vegas). Nous serons finalement 10 dans notre van, ce qui reste confortable.

On commence la journée par une petite visite de San Fran, en commençant par Lombard Street. Météo couverte (mais c'est habituel), rue très pentue.

This Sunday is the first day of the tour. Loading scheduled at 8. The night was not so good, as i kept looking my watch each 1/4 hour. After breakfast, the suntrek vans arrive. We split the passengers between them. As suntrek told me before, we are 15 on southwest, + those making gold rush (stop in Vegas). Finally, we will be 10 in the van, which remains confortable. We begin the day with a visit of SF, first with a stop on Lombard Street. Cloudy, foggy weather, steep street.

C'est l'occasion de voir également le Cable Car. It's also a good opportunity to see the cable car.

On se dirige ensuite vers le Golden Gate. Aaaah le Golden Gate. Enfin! Ca faisait longtemps que je souhaitais voir San Francisco. C'est fait! Quel ouvrage que ce golden gate. Terminé en 1937, et entretenu en permanence depuis, il est loin de faire son âge. Il est d'ailleurs en travaux pour l'instant, histoire de lui permettre de résister au Big One.

After Lombard, we go to the Golden Gate. Aaaaah THE golden gate. Finally! One of my dream is now reality, for a long time i wanted to visit SF. Now it's done! What a bridge. Completed in 1937, and maintained permanently since then, it's far from looking old. People still work on it, to keep it safe for the Big One.

Direction ensuite Fisherman's Wharf: Pier 39, les sea lions, première vue sur Alcatraz. Et le soleil commence à pointer!
Next stop is Fisherman's wharf: pier 39, sea lions, first view on Alcatraz. And the sun is finally shining!

On est ensuite parti sur Haight Street. La rue à l'origine du mouvement hippie à San Fran. A proximité du Golden gate park. Musique, drogues douces, insouciance... On mange dans un bar avant, déjà, notre dernier arrêt à SF: Alamo square et les Painted Ladies.

We left fisherman's wharf for haight street. The one were the hippie impulse became reality. Close to the golden gate park. Music, drugs, carefree attitude... We have lunch in a bar, before having our last stop in SF: Alamo square & the painted ladies.

En milieu d'après-midi, on prend la direction de Santa Cruz, ou nous installons notre premier camp.

Tout ça va vite, pas de temps mort. Certains diront trop vite, je préfère ça à mourir d'ennui. Santa Cruz donc. Nous nous rendons sur un spot de surfeurs ou nous restons quelques minutes. Direction le boardwalk ensuite, et ses attractions foraines. On y retrouve d'ailleurs un des plus vieux roller coaster, puisqu'il a été terminé en 1925. Bien évidemment, on teste, c'est terrible! De retour au camp en début de soirée, c'est Aaron, notre trekleader, qui nous prépare le repas: poulet caraïbes. Soirée tranquille et couché à 22h30.
NB: le camp est bien équipé: douches, sanitaires, lavoir. Il s'agit du Santa Cruz Ranch.

In the mid-afternoon, we leave to Santa Cruz, where we set up our first camp. We move fast, but i rather have that, than getting bored. So...Santa Cruz. Our first stop is a surfers spot, where we stay for some minutes. Then we go to the famous boardwalk. There, you have various rides possible. We test the roller coaster, which was built in 1925. It's coool! Tonight, Aaron (trekleader) is our cook: caraib chicken. Quiet night, in the tent at 22.30. NB: camp is nice, free showers, bathroom, laundry. If i'm right, it's the Santa Cruz Ranch.

Nous passons la première nuit au City Center Hostel. Située sur Ellis street. Petit déjeuner proposé le matin (jus d'orange ou café, donnuts, banane 0,5$), salon internet, salon TV. Ascenseur archaique.

We spend the first night at the City Center Hostel, on Ellis Street. Breakfast offered (orange juice, coffie, donnuts, banana 0,5$), internet room, TV room. Non practical lift.

Chambres dortoir, par 4. Chacun un casier, salle de bain avec lavabo, baignoire et WC.
4 people per room, each one has a locker. Bathroom with shower, WC & sink.

9-9-2006 Départ, Vol - Flight

Ca y est, 4 mois après avoir décidé de partir direction Southwest, il est temps de partir. Bruxelles-Atlanta-San Francisco, avec Delta Airlines. Les appareils ne sont pas hyper récents, résultat, pas de système vidéo personnel... Pas terrible ça! Et je ne parle pas des films proposés. Enfin, ce n'est pas le plus important. Les repas étaient eux conformes aux normes, donc pas trop mal:

A Atlanta, je retrouve Rianne, Audrey et Debby, qui font le même tour que moi. Vol ensemble jusque SF, et 26 heures après le départ, dodo!

That's it, 4 month after deciding to leave for Southwest, it's time to go! Brussel-Atlanta-San Francisco, with Delta Airlines. The planes aren't really brand new, so, no personal entertaining system.

Not good! And i'm not talking about the movies...! But it's not the most important thing, so... The meals were ok.
In Atlanta, i meet Rianne, Audrey and Debby who are doing the same tour. We fly together to SF, where (26 hours after leaving home) i can get some sleep!

Clap de fin - That's a wrap!

Bonjour a tous,
nous sommes le 30/9... et le tour est termine. Je me trouve actuellement a l'auberge de jeunesse d'ou je tape ces quelques lignes.

Beaucoup de choses se sont passees depuis le dernier post. Las Vegas a ete un super bon moment: sortie, limousine, ... Des attractions d'enfer, du saut en parachute. Grand moment donc!

Cap ensuite sur Death Valley... quelle immensite, quelle chaleur! Logement a Bishop. Le lendemain, arret a Mono Lake et Bodie avant de filer vers Yosemite. La aussi un bon moment, de supers paysages, de longs hikings...Et pour finir 2 nuits a Petaluma.

Vendredi consacre a des arrets "photo paysage": Sausalito,marin headlands, golden gate bridge, exploratorium, twin peaks... Avant de finir sur une haute note, avec le tour de la baie de San Francisco en catamaran, buffet-boissons. Passage par Alcatraz, demi tour sous le Golden Gate, retour au port en nocturne!

Et ce matin, vers 11h, nous avions tous le coeur serre... On a pris conge de Aaron. F***! Is it really over?? On a l'impression que avec 3 semaines devant soi, on a le temps. Fausse idee, 3 semaines, ca file a haute vitesse. La prochaine fois, je demanderai un mois de conge a mon patron [j'suis pas sur du tout d'avoir son accord...] Bref...

Ce soir, souper en commun et ce dimanche a 4h30, direction l'aeroport.

Depuis San Francisco, pour ce dernier post live, a bientot pour la suite!

it's september the 30th...and tour is over! I'm currently at the hostel, typing those lines.
Lot of things happened since the last post. Las Vegas was great: party time, limo, skydiving... Really great!
Death Valley was next. Big, hot. Night in Bishop. The next day, we went to Mono Lake and Bodie Gosht town before going to Yosemite. We also had good time, nice landscapes, hikings... And the last 2 nights in Petaluma.

On friday we went back to San Francisco for some pictures stops: Sausalito, Marine Headlands, Golden Gate walk, exploratorium, Twin Peaks... And that night, THE event of the day, the San Fran Bay cruise, drinks, food! Alcatraz, Golden Gate and city at night!

This morning, at 11, we were sad... Aaron dropped us at the hostel. F***! Is it really over? We think that with 3 weeks to go, we have a lot of time! Wrong idea, it goes so fast!. Next time, i will ask a full month off! (not sure my boss will agree on that)...

Tonight, last dinner together and sunday morning, 4.30, airport!

Update - Bryce Canyon

Bonjour a tous,

je trouve enfin l'internet a Bryce Canyon. Je peux donc enfin actualiser ce blog. D'abord mes excuses pour les mms, qui apparement n'ont pas fonctionne (sorry aussi pour les fautes d'accent, pas facile en qwerty).

Deux semaines ecoulees deja, nous mettons le cap sur vegas demain.

Petit resume:
SF a ete vite oublie, d'autant plus que le temps le matin n'etait pas extra. Next, Santa Cruz. Le boardwalk, ses attractions , ces surfeurs.
Petit arret a Monterrey.Ensuite comme prevu, cap sur Santa Barbara. Bien aussi.
Los Angeles, la cite des anges... Vu ce que nous voulions voir: Hollywood boulevard, Beverly Hills, Sunset Strip, Venice Beach, Malibu... J'en oublie surement!
Cap ensuite sur San Diego, d'ou j'qi poste un message vocal qui apparement n'est pas arrive... Passe la journee downtown avant de prendre le soleil a la plage en fin d'apres midi. Un bon moment!
On a ensuite mis le cap sur grand canyon. Nous avons gagne en spectaculaire, perdu en temperature: 0 degre... Brrrrrr, froid ca!

Bref... deja plus de 700 photos en boutique, des mini films...

I have (at least) found a computer in Bryce Canyon! I'm now able to update this blog. First, my apologizes for the MMS service (which doesn't work), sorry also for the small typing mistakes (not easy for me with a qwerty machine).

Two weeks already since the beginning of this tour, tomorrow we will be heading to Vegas.

Short summary:
San Fran was off very quickly, and the weather was not great. We went to Santa Cruz: boardwalk, roaller coasters, surfers. Short stop in Monterrey, then Santa Barbara. Nice city.
Los Angeles. We have seen what we wanted to: Hollywood boulevard, Beverly Hills, Sunset strip, Venice Beach, Malibu... Then further south to San Diego. I spent the day downtown before going to the beach in the afternoon. It was great! And then, Grand Canyon. It was spectacular, but really cold!!
Now...more than 700 pics already, mini movies...

cette fois-ci, nous y sommes. Plus que quelques heures (14 à l'heure ou je poste) avant de s'envoler pour San Francisco. Les dernières heures ont été riches en informations. Suntrek m'a en effet communiqué que durant les 2 premières semaines, nous serons 21! A décomposer comme suit: 15 pour Southwest, et 6 pour le tour Goldrush (qui lui s'arrête à Las Vegas). Nous serons répartis dans 2 vans. Je pense donc que ce sera totalement différent par rapport à mon séjour 2005.

this is time, we are close to it. A few hours to go (14 at the time of this post) before taking off for San Francisco. The last hours have been full of news. Suntrek has told me that during the first 2 weeks, we will be 21! To split this way: 15 doing Southwest, and 6 the GoldRush tour (which ends in Las Vegas). We will have two vans for the trip. I think it will be totally different from last year experience!

Autant le savoir de suite, Suntrek offre 2 possibilités: camping ou hôtel. Dans ce 2ème cas, c'est plus cher, et les tours sont moins nombreux. J'opte donc pour le camping! Nous nous retrouvons donc le matin du 1er jour pour faire connaissance. Comme dit dans un post précédent, nous sommes 14 maximum dans le van. On fait ses courses, on cuisine nous-même. Ce qui permet encore de compresser le budget.

Good to know first, Suntrek offers 2 choices: camping or lodging. In this case, it's more expensive and they are less tours. That's why i'm opting for camping! We all meet at the beginning of the tour. As i said in a previous post, we can be 14 maximum in the van. We do shopping, and we are preparing our meals. That's a good way to keep the budget as low as possible.

Pourquoi Suntrek? Why Suntrek?

Plusieurs choses m'ont dirigé vers Suntrek. La première, ma relative inexpérience des USA. Ce n'est pas avec une semaine en Louisiane que l'on se fait à la vie là-bas, la conduite, etc... Donc, je n'avais pas envie de louer une voiture et tracer ma route au petit bonheur la chance! Deuxièmement, je n'avais pas envie non plus du piège à touriste, de la grosse organisation. Je cherchais quelque chose à taille humaine. Enfin, je souhaitais en profiter pour rencontrer, si possible, d'autres jeunes, de Belgique ou d'ailleurs. Le tout bien secoué, servi frais m'a orienté vers Suntrek.

Many things made me chose Suntrek. First one was my inexperience. Living for a week in Louisiana is not enough to get used to life over there, driving rules,etc... So, i didn't want to rent a car and hope to be lucky on the road! Second, i was not looking for the "big tourist organization". I was looking for something small, humane. Last, i was looking to meet other young travellers, from Belgium or not. Take all this, shake well, serve it cool, you get Suntrek.

Le voyage est une boucle de 3 semaines. Comme vous pouvez le voir sur la carte, on se dirige d'abord plein sud jusque San Diego, avant de mettre cap au nord est en direction de Monument Valley, Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Las Vegas et puis retour à San Francisco. This is a 3 weeks round trip from San Fran and back. As you can see on the map, we first head south to San Diego, before going NorthEast to Monument Valley, Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Vegas and... Je vais donc voyager en van (sans doute un Ford E350 pour ceux que ça intéresse) avec plusieurs autres personnes. Nous serons maximum 14.

Welcome on this blog! I'm leaving at the end of the week for the States. It will be my third trip over there. Following Louisiana, the east coast, i have now decided to visit the famous West Coast. My aim with this blog is to share my trip with you, give you pratical informations, but mostly to try to make you travel and join that experience. As i won't have my computer with me, i have looked for ways to keep this blog updated. There are some mobile solutions, but the realiability is not guaranteed. Bienvenue sur ce blog!
Je pars d'ici quelques jours aux USA, ce sera mon troisième voyage là-bas. Après la Louisiane, après la côte est, j'ai opté pour la fameuse côte Ouest... L'objectif de ce blog est de vous faire partager ce séjour, de vous proposer des infos sur les aspects pratiques, mais surtout vous donner l'envie de partir... Pour me permettre de tenir ce site à jour durant mon absence, il existe de nombreuses techniques mobiles. Il semble cependant que la fiabilité de celles-ci ne soient pas au rendez-vous. Je croise cependant les doigts pour qu'au moins une d'elles fonctionne! Nous verrons à l'usage...Bonne lecture!
